Great Leaders Are Authentic Leaders

Great leadership is a challenge – leadership development is an on-going process which should build on recognising the unique personality style of the leader.

Over the last decades the focus on how we develop good leaders has changed. In the 1930-1950ties leaders were born to lead, in the 1980ties leader were characterised according to their output, in the 1990ties the concept of Emotional Intelligence shaped our understanding of leadership and for the last decade leadership has been seen as part of a complex system with increased consideration to value-based aspects of leadership.

Both emotional intelligence and value-based, authentic leadership are elements which need to be developed all through our careers. The big question, which many companies face, is which tools can help us develop emotional intelligence and value-based leadership and with these effective leaders?

It is well known that different typology tools like Jungian Type Index (JTI) and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) can help leaders work on their leadership skills. The key to effective leadership is to be found in self-awareness. It is not enough to look for the leader with the “right” personality, but more helpful to work with the leaders so they can adapt their style to meet the needs of the situation and to be able to adapt style, it is outmost important that you understand your style in details.

The Jungian Type Index (JTI) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) frameworks can help the individuals work with understanding their own and others personal preferences and differences. This work is not a “quick fix” but more a process which once it is started will continue to provide the individuals with new insights to why we react as we do and how we cooperate best.

If leaders understand their personality preferences and how it influences thinking, behaviour and relationships, it will help them become stronger leaders. The typology tools help leader understand their personal preferences and leadership style. Leaders can in this way overcome blind spots and will be able to respond more effectively to staff with a broader repertoire of communication, thinking, conflict-resolution and decision-making styles.
